Long-term tree survival and diversity of highway tree planting projects

چکیده
Long-term, multi-decade research on planted tree survival in urban settings is sparse. One understudied environment highway rights-of-way (ROW), lands adjacent to high-speed, unsignalized roadways. We conducted a re-inventory of planting cohorts northern Illinois, U.S. 48 km-long near Chicago which were 10-, 21-, and 30-years old evaluate long-term patterns diversity. Using each randomly selected site along the as unit observation analysis, we compared number trees documented record drawing currently alive determine percent survival. evaluated 224 sites originally contained 2944 collected data about location. For oldest cohort, 26% still 2018 (median by species = 16%, Q1 0%, Q3 48%), while 31% 21-year-old cohort (med. 6%, 47%) 86% 10-year-old 85%, 74%, 96%). The 21- 30-year-old matches estimates other researchers, higher than expected. only location characteristic that significantly affected was traffic islands (areas between entrance/exit ramps). Species with low drought tolerance less likely be for cohort. Waterlogging tolerant more Since some had very survival, richness diversity s study areas declined initial drawings reinventory. This demonstrates challenges maintaining ROW emphasizes importance selection.

Implementing Municipal Tree Planting: Los Angeles Million-Tree Initiative
Urban forests are increasingly being seen as an important infrastructure that can help cities remediate their environmental impacts. This work reports on the first steps in implementing a million tree program in Los Angeles and the ways such a biogenic-living-infrastructure has been approached. Numbers of studies have been done to quantify the benefits of urban forests, but little has been writ...
متن کاملSpecies for Christmas Tree Planting in Virginia*
Christmas trees can be grown through out the state, and growers are located in all regions. Se lec tion of the proper species, however, is important. Soil conditions and gen er al climate are the primary considerations influencing species selection, but other characteristics, such as con sum er pref er ence, species characteristics and require ments, condition of the planting site, and the pres...
متن کاملLong Short-Term Memory Over Tree Structures
The chain-structured long short-term memory (LSTM) has showed to be effective in a wide range of problems such as speech recognition and machine translation. In this paper, we propose to extend it to tree structures, in which a memory cell can reflect the history memories of multiple child cells or multiple descendant cells in a recursive process. We call the model S-LSTM, which provides a prin...
متن کاملSurvival of tree seedlings across space and time: estimates from long-term count data
1 Tree diversity in forests may be maintained by variability in seedling recruitment. Although forest ecologists have emphasized the importance of canopy gaps in generating spatial variability that might promote tree regeneration, the effects of canopy gaps on seedling recruitment may be offset by dense forest understories. 2 Large annual fluctuations in recruitment processes, coupled with the ...
